5 Red Flags to Avoid When Hiring a WordPress Freelancer

I've seen plenty of projects land on my desk specifically because the client's previous WordPress freelancer disappeared, delivered something broken, or wasn't who their profile suggested. A few patterns show up consistently.

1. No Staging Environment, Ever

If a freelancer's plan is to make every change directly on your live site, that's a red flag. A staging environment (or at minimum, backups before every change) is non-negotiable for any serious WordPress work. Ask directly how they plan to test changes before pushing live.

2. Vague Answers About Plugin Choices

Ask why they'd use a specific plugin for your use case, and listen for a real answer versus 'it's popular.' Plugin bloat is one of the most common causes of slow, broken WordPress sites — a good developer can explain trade-offs, not just install things.

3. Reluctance to Break Work Into Milestones

A freelancer who insists on being paid in full up front, with no milestones, is asking you to take on all the risk. Reasonable developers are comfortable with milestone-based payments tied to specific deliverables.

4. Reviews That Only Mention Price, Never Quality

When scanning reviews, watch for a pattern where every review praises 'fast' and 'cheap' but never mentions code quality, communication, or whether the site actually worked well afterward. That combination often means speed was prioritized over doing it right.

5. No Verifiable Track Record

A profile with inflated claims but few completed, reviewed jobs is hard to trust.
