Case Study: Kajabi vs WordPress for an Educational Website
Course creators and educational businesses often ask the same question before building: WordPress with a learning management plugin, or an all-in-one platform like Kajabi? A recent Upwork project — building out an educational website on Kajabi — is a useful lens on that decision.
Why the Client Chose Kajabi
Kajabi bundles course hosting, email marketing, sales pages, and payments into a single platform. For a client wanting to launch and manage course content without also managing WordPress hosting, plugin updates, and LMS plugin configuration, that bundled simplicity was the deciding factor.
What Kajabi Trades Away
- Less design flexibility than a custom WordPress theme or page builder
- Higher ongoing platform cost compared to WordPress hosting plus a one-time build
- Less control if the business later wants highly custom functionality outside course delivery
When WordPress Wins Instead
WordPress (with a plugin like LearnDash, or a custom-built solution) tends to make more sense when the educational content is one part of a larger site rather than the whole business, when full design and functionality control matters more than convenience, or when the client already has WordPress infrastructure and doesn't want a second platform to manage.
The Build
For this project, the work centered on structuring course content, sales pages, and the overall funnel inside Kajabi's system — platform-specific work that looks different from typical WordPress development, but draws on the same underlying skills: information architecture, conversion-focused page design, and clean structure that's easy for the client to manage afterward.
The Honest Take
I build on both platforms, and the right answer genuinely depends on the business, not platform loyalty. If you're deciding between them, the deciding question is usually: do you want a dedicated course platform, or a website that happens to include courses?
