Case Study: Building an E-Commerce Page & Pop-Up System in WooCommerce

Some of the most valuable client relationships on Upwork don't come from single big projects — they come from a series of smaller ones that build trust over time. This case study is one of those.

The Client Relationship

This was a client I'd already worked with for a couple of years on various smaller WordPress projects by the time this one came in. That history mattered: less time was spent on onboarding and context-setting, and more on the actual build.

The Brief

The project involved building out a new e-commerce page along with a pop-up system designed to capture attention at the right moment in the shopping flow, without becoming intrusive.

The Approach

  • Built the page to match the store's existing design system rather than introducing a new visual pattern
  • Configured pop-up triggers based on user behavior and timing instead of a blanket delay-based pop-up on every visitor
  • Tested across devices, since pop-up behavior is one of the most common places mobile UX breaks

Iteration Was Part of the Process

As is common with page and pop-up work, the first version wasn't the final one — the client and I went back and forth to get positioning, timing, and copy placement right. That kind of iteration is normal for conversion-focused work, and it's a big part of why milestone-based scoping works better than a single fixed handoff for this type of project.

The Outcome

The client's review specifically highlighted thoroughness and a willingness to work through details until they were right — which reflects the actual process more than the technical build alone.
